What's Happening to the Jurerê Mangrove?

This week, around March 18, the Jurerê mangrove has a very strong smell, and there’s a badly degraded area right next to the ICMBio office (the federal agency that looks after the mangroves here).

People in Ratones were already reporting the same smell at the start of the month.

Nobody knows the cause yet. Maybe it’s pollution from the Papaquara and Palha rivers reaching the Ratones basin, or the hailstorm on March 12. The fires set around Ratones over the last few weeks, which are environmental crimes, could be part of it too.

We’re waiting for a technical explanation from ICMBio Florianópolis, the environmental police, Casan (the water and sewage company) and the city hall.

The video report I made that March, about the mangrove of the Carijós Ecological Station.
