This was originally published on my old blog BackpackBook (Livro de Mochila), a project that blended literature and travel, sometimes just traveling in my lucid dreams. It ran as “Norte de Santa Catarina” on March 11, 2009.

It was around two in the morning when we decided to leave on a trip up to the north of the state, to look for the famous Corupá waterfalls and then get lost.
Lost in any town out that way.
I’m not much in favor of driving at night, especially at that hour, but a strong motivation turned up in wanting to see the sun come up on some beach along the way, and in stealing a little more time out of the weekend.
This loop turned out more interesting than we expected. We stopped at Bombinhas to sleep at Quatro Ilhas beach, on the actual beach, then went through Jaraguá, Corupá and São Francisco do Sul before coming down along the coast on the abandoned and intriguing SC-495, past Balneário Barra do Sul and some fantastic and mysterious places. That place deserves another visit.
