  • The End of Livro de Mochila

    Is anybody still there? Anybody still following this blog?

    Well, in case somebody is still out there, I just wanted to say that this blog has reached its end. It was created at a very important moment in my life. Sometimes I don’t even recognize myself reading the older posts, which is a nice feeling. It’s funny to see some of the dreams I ended up making real, the ones that seemed so far away back then.

    It was a lot of fun to write here, and just as much fun to meet people, the real ones and the virtual ones and even some fictional ones.

    Then a line from an old song about heading off to Bahia and maybe coming back one of these days.

  • Kombi Alice

    Two traveler friends were once stuck with little money to continue their journey.

    We happened to bump into each other on the road, and a quick brainstorm led us to create a project where people could fund their trip by buying a 10×10 cm piece on their kombi to write something.

    The inspiration came from the 1 Million Pixel project, where people could buy a pixel for $1. I helped them set up a page and payment system. Everything went smoothly, and many people ended up helping them complete the trip.

  • Selling the Kombi

It ran as “Vendo a kombi” on February 17, 2014. In Portuguese “vendo” means both “I’m selling” and “seeing”, so the title reads both ways.

    The season of traveling by Kombi is coming to an end. I’m going back to carrying my baggage on my back. But I’m not going to sell her to just anybody, only to somebody who has a good idea of what to do with her.

    Didn’t get it?

    Tell me your idea, and if I like it, I’ll sell you the Kombi for whatever price you want 😀

  • Witmarsum (Brazil)

    To give ourselves a reason to travel, we decided to make one of those silly bets we always make. This time it was to find out… to find out what, again?

    What do you call somebody born in Witmarsum?

    We got so excited about what we’d find in that town that we never even thought about a prize for the winner, mostly because the suggestions were fairly outlandish. Except for Chikão’s bet, which we later discovered was “coincidentally” the same answer Wikipedia gives. As he put it himself, the internet isn’t everything 😀

    At the start it looked like it would be a disaster, getting up at five in the morning and traveling almost 300 km to settle a bet. Then the things that went wrong made the trip a lot of fun.

    The Mennonites fled the town

    We turned up a few curiosities about the place, including that the original colonists of the Witmarsum in Santa Catarina (Brazil), German and Russian Mennonites, decided to buy land in Paraná and found a new Witmarsum, called Colônia Witmarsum. There’s a documentary that covers some of that history and a theory about why they moved.
