Heading South: Santa Maria, Uruguay and Buenos Aires

Heading South, Part 1: Santa Maria

August 2005

Raquel and I managed to get some time off work and set off with backpacks on an amazing trip. The route was half defined, since we could change plans along the way, but we were so taken with the cities we’d picked that we stuck to the plan exactly. The goal was mainly to visit Santa Maria (RS), Montevideo (Uruguay) and Buenos Aires (Argentina), plus other towns on the way.

It was 10 days of adventure across all kinds of transportation and all kinds of places to sleep. We got ourselves into a few messes, the kind amateur backpackers get into, but in the end it all worked out, and the surprises and strange moments only made the trip more exciting.

Heading South, Part 2: Uruguay

Continuing our trip south, not to the far south yet, but almost there…

I just found out that between videos and photos we have 1,600 files from this trip, a bit over 2 GB… crazy, and I still haven’t had the patience to watch all the videos.

Anyway, back to it. This part of the trip was one of the most exciting. We crossed the border into Uruguay on foot. Unfortunately we didn’t take many photos at the border, because we didn’t feel very safe in that area.. there were beautiful monuments and places, but oh well… we also got a bit lost looking for Immigration to get our entry “TarRReta” for the country.

From Rivera to Montevideo we took a bus, one of the best of the whole trip, but unfortunately we got to the capital at night, “mental note: never arrive in an unfamiliar city at night”, and we got into a few messes, like accepting a punk’s invitation to stay at a hostel in a sketchy area, falling apart, where the power went out in the middle of my shower and I dried myself with a duvet because I’d forgotten to bring a towel.. hehehehe…

Well, the next day we walked a good chunk of the city, a looong walk, about 50 blocks with the backpacks on, if not more…

Overnight we did part of the trip by bus and part by boat (Buquebus) to Buenos Aires.

But in short, Uruguay has gorgeous cities, I recommend it!
